South Herts CAMRA Pub of the Year
If you want to know the best places to get the best cask-conditioned ale, CAMRA's Good Beer Guide 2010 is the place to look.
But if you're looking for the crème de la crème then we can help you as South Herts Branch proudly have just announced their Pub Of The Year.
Gold Winner is The Six Bells, St Michael's Street, St Albans AL3 4SH
Jo Marrion and Patrick Remmington run The Six Bells as a true free house serving Oakham JHB, Fuller's London Pride and Timothy Taylor Landlord plus two ever-changing guest ales, in over-sized glasses to ensure a full measure every time. Alongside the fantastically kept real ales, excellent home-cooked food is also served and entertainment is a key feature of this popular community pub with women's and men's darts teams, a football team and occasional quiz and cards nights. A true community pub catering for all. Trivia fans will want to know that The Six Bells is the only modern licensed premises within the walls of the Roman City of Verulamium.
Silver Winner is The Woodman, Wild Hill, Hatfield AL9 6EA
Seven times winner of Pub Of The Year in the last 10 years alone, The Woodman is a testament to what makes a friendly, traditional community pubs successful. Excellent Home cooked pub grub food only accounts for 5% of the pub's sales but with a wide cross-section of society making up its clientele and they all come in large numbers for the same reason: the exceptional quality of the beer. Up to six beers are available with three ever-changing guests sourced from smaller breweries in Hertfordshire and beyond. Current licensee Tom Craig took over the pub from his father four years ago to continue the family success story, offering a fantastic welcome and convivial atmosphere for all customers to enjoy.
Bronze Winner is The Crooked Billet, 140 Musley Hill, Ware SG12 7NL
For the second time in three years the Crooked Billet has been included in South Hertfordshire's top three pubs. Landlords Stuart and Sue have run the pub for 16 years and have made the "Billet" a shining example of what a great community pub should be – providing well kept real ales from around Britain and a great atmosphere for their regulars and the local neighbourhood. There are darts and pool teams and a regular throng of drinkers for important TV sports events but you will find just as many customers who love to pass away an hour or two with friends and neighbours. Away from the bright lights of the town centre at the top of Musley Hill, a detour should be a must for those visiting Ware in search of a perfect pint. The pub is closed Monday, Wednesday and Thursday lunchtimes but is open all day weekends.
Highly commended are The White Lion, St Albans; Old Cross Tavern, Hertford and Elephant & Castle in Amwell.
